High fat diets for weight loss among subjects with elevated fasting glucose levels: The PREDIMED study
2020
Abstract Aim We studied fasting plasma glucose (FPG) as a determinant of weight change on high-fat diets in the PREDIMED trial. Methods A total of 3,622 participants were randomized to receive one of two Mediterranean diets (n = 2,616) or a control diet (n = 1,006) for 5 years and had complete data for baseline FPG and body-weight development. Weight change by pre-treatment FPG categories ( Results The two Mediterranean diets contained 41.5 E% fat, 16.5 E% protein, and 40 E% carbohydrate whereas the control diet contained 37.8 E% fat, 16.8 E% protein and 43.2 E% carbohydrate. In the Mediterranean diet groups, participants with FPG≥115 lost 1.04 kg (95% CI 0.68; 1.41, n = 1115) whereas parti…
Differences in Participation and Performance Trends in Age Group Half and Full Marathoners
2014
International audience; Recent studies investigated participation and performance trends in age group half marathoners and full marathoners for a single event. The present study investigated participation and performance trends in age group athletes in all half marathons and full marathons held in a single country during a given period of time. Changes in running performance and age of 226,754 half marathoners and 86,419 full marathoners competing in Switzerland between 2000 and 2010 were analyzed using linear regression analyses. The number of half marathoners increased (P < 0.01) from 2000 to 2010 for both men (+231%) and women (+299%). In contrast, the number of male and female full mara…
Myopia and Cognitive Performance: Results From the Gutenberg Health Study.
2016
Purpose To analyze the association between myopia and cognitive performance. Methods A cohort of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study included 3819 eligible enrollees between 40 and 79 years. We used the Tower of London (TOL) test to assess cognitive performance. Myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent (SE) ≤ -0.5 diopters (D) via noncycloplegic autorefractometry. We conducted linear mixed models with the SE as the dependent variable and the age, sex, duration of education, and TOL score as covariates. Results Complete data were available for 3452 participants (90.4%). The mean TOL score was 14.0 ± 3.9 in the myopes versus 12.9 ± 4.0 in the nonmyopes (P < 0.001). The mean TOL sc…
New Evidence of the Tax Effect on SME Optimum Debt Maturity Structure
2009
This paper analyzes the influence the tax effect has on optimum SME debt maturity structure. Unlike previous research, this study builds a dynamic adjustment model which endogenizes optimum structure and assumes the existence of adjustment costs. The model is then estimated by applying a system-GMM regression to a complete data panel (12,250 firms) covering the period dating from 1997 to 2004. SMEs adjust to their target at a speed of 35%, which is the equivalent of employing around 20 months to cover only half of the existing gap. This rate is lower than those obtained in other similar papers studying large companies with publicly tradeable equity.
Seasonal and daily variation in physical activity among three-year-old Finnish preschool children
2013
The purposes of this study were to assess seasonal, daily, and gender variations in children’s physical activity (PA). ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers were used to record the three-year-old children’s PA levels for five consecutive days in autumn and winter. Complete data for both seasons were obtained for 47 children. Despite a significant difference in seasonal temperatures (p < .001), differences were only found for weekdays light PA (p = .021). No difference in PA was observed between weekdays and weekend days. Only 20% of the sample had ≥120 minutes light-to-vigorous PA (LMVPA), and 46% of children had ≥60 minutes moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). Boys spent more minutes in LMVPA (p = .001…
Digital information receiver based on stochastic resonance
2003
International audience; An electronic receiver based on stochastic resonance is presented to rescue subthreshold modulated digital data. In real experiment, it is shown that a complete data restoration is achieved for both uniform and Gaussian white noise.
973 Knee control and jump-landing technique in young basketball and floorball players
2016
Background Poor knee alignment is associated with increased loading of the joints, ligaments and tendons, and may increase the risk of injury. The study purpose was to compare differences in knee kinematics between basketball and floorball players during a vertical drop jump (VDJ) task. We wanted to investigate whether basketball players, whose sport includes frequent jump-landings, exhibited better knee control compared with floorball players, whose sport involves less jumping. Methods Players (aged 12–21 years) were recruited from six basketball and floorball clubs of the Tampere City district, Finland. Complete data was obtained from 173 basketball and 141 floorball players. Peak knee va…
Prevalence and risk factors of actinic keratosis in patients attending Italian dermatology clinics
2017
Background: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common keratinocyte intraepidermal neoplasia. Objective: To assess AK prevalence and potential risk factors in patients attending Italian general dermatology clinics. Materials & methods: This retrospective study was conducted on clinical data from consecutive white outpatients aged ≥30 years, attending 24 general dermatology clinics between December 2014 and February 2015. AK prevalence (entire population) and multivariate risk factor analysis (patients with current/previous AK and complete data) are presented. Results: AK prevalence in 7,284 patients was 27.4% (95% CI: 26.4-28.4%); 34.3% in men and 20.0% in women (p<0.001). Independent AK ris…
Comparing Spatial and Spatio-temporal FPCA to Impute Large Continuous Gaps in Space
2018
Multivariate spatio-temporal data analysis methods usually assume fairly complete data, while a number of gaps often occur along time or in space. In air quality data long gaps may be due to instrument malfunctions; moreover, not all the pollutants of interest are measured in all the monitoring stations of a network. In literature, many statistical methods have been proposed for imputing short sequences of missing values, but most of them are not valid when the fraction of missing values is high. Furthermore, the limitation of the methods commonly used consists in exploiting temporal only, or spatial only, correlation of the data. The objective of this paper is to provide an approach based …
The Joint Censored Gaussian Graphical Lasso Model
2022
The Gaussian graphical model is one of the most used tools for inferring genetic networks. Nowadays, the data are often collected from different sources or under different biological conditions, resulting in heterogeneous datasets that exhibit a dependency structure that varies across groups. The complex structure of these data is typically recovered using regularized inferential procedures that use two penalties, one that encourages sparsity within each graph and the other that encourages common structures among the different groups. To this date, these approaches have not been developed for handling the case of censored data. However, these data are often generated by gene expression tech…
